From canyon roads
to mountain dawn.

Follow the Nujiang (Salween) valley north from Baoshan. In Liuku, feel the scale of the canyon and discover Lisu culture and local flavours. In Zhiziluo, walk the old streets of the former prefectural seat, where the 20th-century county-town past remains visible in its buildings and public spaces.

Continue to Gongshan, then cross the high country at Kongque Mountain for a short uphill hike and broad mountain views. Finish at Feilai Temple, looking across to Kawagebo and the sacred Meili Snow Mountain range. The famous sunrise glow is weather dependent.

THE SIX DAYS

Baoshan → Liuku

Drive to Lushui’s main town, Liuku. Settle in, then take a first look at the Nujiang canyon and explore the riverside town. Look out for Lisu culture, local market life and regional flavours including fragrant cao guo (black cardamom).

Liuku → Zhiziluo

Travel north along the Nujiang, with time for viewpoints and village stops. Arrive in Zhiziluo and stay overnight in the village.

Walk the former county and prefectural seat: the octagonal building, old public buildings and streets that preserve a vivid mid-20th-century atmosphere, including traces of the Mao-era past.

Zhiziluo → Gongshan

Continue through the dramatic upper Nujiang valley to Gongshan for the night.

Gongshan → Kongque Pass → Feilai Temple

Stop at Kongque Mountain for a short uphill hike to the high pass and open views. Continue to Feilai Temple and settle in with Meili Snow Mountain on the horizon.

Meili sunrise → Shangri-La

Rise early for the chance to see first light turn the peaks gold, then drive to Shangri-La to finish the journey.

The Meili sunrise depends on clear skies. The Kongque Mountain hike is at high altitude; route length and conditions are checked locally.
